What “offline” must mean in writing
An offline signing station is not merely a laptop with Wi-Fi disabled. It is a controlled physical zone: no persistent network interfaces, a defined set of peripherals, and a media lane that is inventoried before and after every ceremony.
Teams in Korea often share rooms with manufacturing IT. We teach how to mark the zone so night-shift staff do not borrow the “unused” machine for diagnostics.
Core layers
- Hardware baseline — approved chassis, disabled radios, sealed ports you do not use.
- Image discipline — rebuild from known media; never patch online “just this once.”
- Key material path — who may touch seeds, tokens, or HSM PINs; how custody is logged.
- Egress lane — one way for signed artifacts; dual-hash verification on both sides of the air gap.
Setup sequence we coach
Use this as a conversation starter with your change board—not as a certification.
- Inventory the room Photograph every cable path. Remove anything that is not on the approved bill of materials.
- Lock the image Install from verified media. Document package versions. Store a cold spare image in a sealed bag.
- Define witness roles Operator, witness, and recorder are three people when risk warrants it—never three hats on one person during production.
- Rehearse a bad day Corrupt transfer media on purpose. Time the recovery. Update the checklist where people hesitated.
When USB workflows are the wrong answer
If your threat model includes sophisticated physical adversaries, or if signing volume exceeds what a dual-operator ceremony can sustain, Offline Signing Station Setup training is still useful—but you may need an HSM or managed signing service. We say that out loud in every cohort.
