When to stop using USB and escalate to an HSM conversation

Signals it is time to escalate
- Signing volume forces ceremonies daily with exhausted witnesses.
- Keys protect high-impact production code or customer-facing root material.
- Physical access to the room cannot be tightly controlled across shifts.
- Regulators or customers explicitly expect HSM-backed controls.
Training still helps—you will run cleaner migrations—but do not use our courses as a reason to delay necessary hardware. Talk with your security architecture partners; we are educators, not a signing vendor.
